Uploading Files to Web Hosting Server

You have a new domain, cheap web hosting and your DNS records are set to point your domain to the web hosting. Now you need to upload your HTML pages or entire CMS to start managing your website. This can be done in many ways. It depends on the file size and the number of files you need to transfer.

In any case you need a FTP account. This was created when you have set up your hosting account. You should have an address of FTP server, user name and password. To use it you will need a FTP client software. upload file There are many free available for download, just Google for it. Once you have it installed you can try to connect to your hosting server. If everything works well you will see the root folder of your hosting account. There should be a folder named public_html, www or with similar name. This is where you should upload your files to be visible from your domain.

Now you have all prerequisites to start uploading files to your web server. However, if there are many files this will take some time. In order to speed things up you can try to upload a compressed archive (zip or gzip) and then to unpack it from hosting control panel file management. Check at your hosting control panel if there is some file management. If it is there then check if you can unpack archive files. This way you can transfer quite a lot of files in very short time.

If you don't have access to such file managers you can still upload archived file and unpack it with some script. Simply Google for "PHP unpacker" or something. If you are using Joomla there is an excellent component called JoomlaPack. It archives the whole site including the database into one big file. To restore this file you need only a kickstart php script which is included. It does everything needed to start Joomla installation process and it also removes the installation folder after the installation process is finished.

Transfer of files to and from web server is pretty simple. If this is your first website then you only need a little practice. Once you will transfer few files in both ways you will soon find out which method should be used in particular case. And because regular backups are a very important part of any website management you will have to transfer files each time you will backup the website.
