The site was founded in 2004, but the federal law enforcement agency shut it down in April 2018. New Times Media launched Backpage in 2002. It soon rose to be the second-largest site in the United States. Backpage supporters attempted to argue that shutting down the site would divert traffickers to other online platforms. In the US, execution is considered illegal except in certain counties in Nevada.
